Start with Training Your Murray, the club’s free guide to training, which anyone can read. MRRA members also get 21 training videos, from the first lessons to confidence around gunshots, and a duck hunter’s notes on training Murrays for the field.
Murrays are clever, keen to please and full of energy, and a Murray with nothing to do will find something to do. Here is what the club has put together to help.
For everyone: Training Your Murray
Training Your Murray is the club’s introduction to training: understanding a breed that was bred to hunt and protect, why a Murray needs a leader, choosing a training method, and why repetition matters. It is the place to start, before a puppy comes home or on day one.
For members: 21 training videos
Murray Training (Members) has 21 videos in five groups. They work through one method step by step, so start at the top and take them in order.
- Start Here: Learning the Basics and Clicker Training. Watch Learning the Basics a few times before you start: it explains the method the rest of the videos use.
- Basic Training: Leave It, Coming When Called, Sit and Stay, and Toilet (Potty) Training.
- Early Problems: Distraction Proofing, Stop Begging, Nipping and Biting, Jumping and Overexcitement, and Chewing.
- Further Training: Capturing, Luring and Shaping; Drop It; Leash Manners; Earning Attention - Dog Confidence (including training for gunshots); Meeting Energy Demands; and Emotional Conditioning.
- Advanced Training: Targeting, Random Rewarding, Barking, and Digging Habits.
As the old members’ training page put it: “Whilst these videos focus on puppies, the skills can be worked with no matter what your dog’s age.”
For hunters: training a Murray for the field
In 2020 Leon Wright, a duck hunter for nigh on 60 years who has written for Australian hunting magazines for over 40, wrote a series for members on training and hunting with his Murrays, Missy and Cobber: teaching a pup to sit, heel work that did not go to plan, and hunting deer and foxes as well as ducks. Read them under Training and Working and Hunting, and on Hunting Information.
How to get the videos
Single, Family and Life members can watch them, and so can Puppy Owner Associates and Rehome Adoption members. Join or renew, sign in, and open Murray Training (Members) from the Our Breed menu. You can also install the MRRA app on your phone and watch them at the park.
