Until 2024 it was illegal to use a Murray River Retriever to retrieve ducks in season in Victoria. The Game Management Authority took its list of permitted dogs from the ANKC, and without a pedigree the breed was not on it. In this article for the SSAA, MRRA member Leon Wright tells the story of how that changed.

It opens with his Murray, Missy, tracking a lost wood duck through long grass, and goes on to the breed’s history, then the years of dealings with Dogs Victoria, the ANKC, government departments and five Victorian ministers. Members voted to drop “Curly Coated” from the name, the ANKC recognised the breed as a pure-bred gundog on 1 January 2022, and the new Wildlife Game Regulations in September 2024 finally made it legal to hunt ducks with a Murray in Victoria.
